Description
Richard posted a picture ( Seen Better Days ) of a very time and weather worn D.H Vampire. A truly sad sight, but as long as it exists there must be hope that, maybe one day, somebody will find the time and money to restore her to, at least in some part, her former glory. I offer by way of contrast this fine example, housed in the RAF Museum Hendon. All too often we see the shiny restored side of things and over look the fact that keeping these things 'alive' is a bloody expensive business. Thanks Richard, it's good and often necessary to be reminded how easily these things can slip away despite all the good intentions........

What a beauty! Guess there's always a price for upkeep.

very beautiful example and superb photo. so many antiques are in private hands and lack of funds to maintain, however many antique planes/jets that are in museums are there on loan. they were in great condition upon coming to the museum. a local museum had a very beautiful Stagger Wing( Mercedes quality), but the owner came after her. another museum here has several aircraft on loan from the Commemorative Air Force. however the CAF has moved their headquarters from Midland,TX to an airport elsewhere in Dallas. so the fate of the loaned aircraft is in limbo

A beautiful old gal mate.

Too true mate and the fact that a lot that keeps these alive is down to donations and volunteers, you can't expect much help from the government as they have their expenses to worry about.

Beautiful plane and a great shot of it!

As you know mate, every aircraft in here has some history or fame behind it.. Check the website! And, when I drag (kicking and screaming) to RAF Cosford, you'll be drooling even more! Me410 anyone? Great shot mate thanks for reminding me of a great visit.. Rob Am getting no e-bots at the moment, so slow getting to all comments, sorry.. Have to Rendo but.... Nothing yet! Rob

Good to see this whole and healthy. The Boeing Restoration Facility in Everett, Washington is full of old planes in some form of restoration. Their Vampire is in the sorriest shape of all...disassembled...fuselage here, wings there, double tailbooms somewhere else. But someday that Vampire will become important to somebody and it is all there for the rebuilder with time and money.
