Description
Captured 5/5/14, early morn, in the parking lot of a local heating and plumbing outfit.
Cycads are seed plants typically characterized by a stout and woody (ligneous) trunk with a crown of large, hard and stiff, evergreen leaves. They usually have pinnate leaves. The individual plants are either all male or all female (dioecious). Cycads vary in size from having trunks only a few centimeters to several meters tall. They typically grow very slowly and live very long, with some specimens known to be as much as 1,000 years old. Because of their superficial resemblance, they are sometimes confused with and mistaken for palms or ferns, but are only distantly related to either. Varieties of this tropical and semitropical species go back to the Jurassic and Triassic periods.

The photo shows the erect, pollen-bearing cone (strobilus) of a male plant. The individual scales (sprophylls) of the cone bear clusters of sproangia.

An outstanding shot, filling up the frame and fanning out like a peacock's tail. You got lots of detail on the leaves; and the cone looks like a huge ear of corn, or else a pineapple with a serious pituitary problem. What a primal beast---I can believe it has roots in earlier geologic periods. Your shot encases the cone like one of those Las Vegas dancers with the big fantails behind them. Wonderful sweep and wonderful detail. And you must have to crane to get these shots, because a lot of them appear to be behind fences, doors, gates, etc. Really outstanding. Never gonna see these in Chicago, I'll tell you that!
