Description

I'm sure all those Alan Alda fans out there will be pleased that I finally nabbed this particular tram - and it's mobile. Red Rocket 4077 approaches the McCaul Street stop on its eastbound journey through downtown Toronto. The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO: Another place of which Rob Ford has never heard) is located just east of Toronto's Chinatown on Dundas Street - on the Dundas Line (Route 505). I was prowling the downtown this last and lovely Saturday - or 'Sa-dur Day' as my New 'Tr-ana' native mother pronounces it (the 'D' is silent) - hoping to nab a rare shot of a TTC streetcar on McCaul Street - unsuccessfully as it was 'Sa-dur Day'. Or better still, a new low floor model streetcar undergoing testing. But then I came across this dynamic moment and quickly snapped my little Sony camera. The artwork is titled 'Large Two Forms' by Henry Moore. The plaque installed at its base says so therefore it must be true. The plaque also sports two dates for the work - 1966 and 1969. Alas I do not have any history about this example of Mr. Moore's creativity. Presumably this display was created in two stages and always intended to be presented together. I do not see any underlying message in the work but it does appear to be a strong push back against the pervasive geometries (aka 'box') of urban Canada in the late 60's. Toronto always seemed to have a groove in the latter 20th Century but there was an undercurrent of conformity that would sprout here and there like weeds. As the case of our streetcars and the efforts of some backwards looking "leaders" to get rid of them - even today. And, of coarse, Mr. Moore's work is very popular with the toddlers. Inspiring artistic curiosity and exercise in the very young. Which is a good thing. In other news: For those of you keeping score of late, our streetcar hating, union busting, "tax saving" (???), crack smoking mayor (he admits it now so I can say so) has gone into rehab... somewhere. To his credit, this has been confirmed to be true and not one of Mr. Ford's less than honest assurances - like the one about not smoking crack. Of coarse he really shouldn't let himself be photographed while doing these things even in one of his 'drunken stupors'. There should be a tourists' map for that - or at least an app. So good news for him, good news for his family, good news for the city. Council seems to be moving upon its whole 'getting work done' agenda now. To paraphrase the deputy (well practically) mayor Norm Kelly, "Boring is good". My thanks to everyone for taking the time to stop by my gallery to have a look. Sorry, no nudity.

Heh, I saw one of the sleek new 'low-rise' streetcars on a test (training) run on Wednesday lunchtime on the 506 route - College westbound at University Ave, just outside MaRS. Looked good, but I didn't have my camera handy. Of course, I am old enough to remember when the current model (pictured above) were brand new and considered very futuristic. You may have heard that Mayor Ford has been seen on the streets in Muskoka this week - leading to speculation he is 'enrolled' at the rehab facility known as Greenstone. The flight to Chicago was clearly just to throw people off his (odious) scent.
