The Ju-87 A Stuka, flown by the Condor Legion, made its debut in the Spanish Civil War, in support of the Nationalist Forces. It was designed as, and was very efficient and successful as, a dedicated dive bomber. Stuka is short for the German word "Sturzkampfflugzeug", "dive bomber". It's main shortcomings of sluggish maneuverability and a susceptibility to fighter attack made it heavily dependent on fighter escort in a mission. Although these major flaws were highlighted during the Battle of Britain, the Ju-87 was manufactured and deployed during the entire war to great effect, with the last model being introduced on the Eastern Front in 1948. The Spanish Civil War proved a weapons manufacturer and command dream of testing a new weapons platform in actual combat, and the next deployment was against Poland at the beginning of Germany's hostilities.
