Where: Cologne, Germany
When: 1 month and 12 days after E-Day, 1:54 pm
Gunnar turned to his daughter. "Gabi, I'm sorry to say you are a terrible host. Did you not think your patient might want something to eat and drink after his long sleep?"
Gabi hung her head in mock shame. "You are right, Pappa. I am a terrible host and a worse nurse. You must be very ashamed of your stupid and thoughtless daughter."
Gunnar climbed to his feet. "I apologise to you, Robert, for my daughter's consideratelessness. Is that even a word? Consideratelessness? It seems like it should be. Anyway, we have a bit of food here. I'll go make us something to eat. I'd ask Gabi to cook, but I think your body has been through enough punishment already."
"Thank you," Rob croaked. As Gunnar stepped into the kitchen and the conversation died down, the loud buzzling/crackling sound filled the silence. Rob turned to Gabi. "What is that sound?"
It was Helen who answered. "Actually, we were hoping you could answer that. You came from that building, didn't you? The one with the lights on the top floor?"
Rob was too drowsy to go into the full story, so he just nodded.
Helen peeked through the window blinds to make sure there were no Hexenjägern in view, then threw the curtains wide open.
From the couch, Rob could see Krystal's apartment building. Or, more accurately, the space where Krystal's apartment building had once been. What stood in its place was...
Even Helen and Gabi, who had no doubt seen the sight countless times already, could not help but stare at it with open mouths.
"What is that?" Gabi asked.
"I have no idea," Rob said. "I've never seen anything like that before in my life."
But even as he said it, he realised it wasn't quite true.
