Description

The Hai Van Pass is a 21 km long pass on National Highway 1A that crosses a spur of the Annamite Range that juts into the South China Sea north of DaNang. Its elevation is 1,627-ft (496 m). The pass is often shrouded in clouds and was a favorite ambush site used by the Viet Cong. Historically, the pass was a physical division between the kingdoms of Champa and Dai Viet. The bunkers were built by the French during their Indo-Chinese War of the 1940's and 50's and were used by the Americans during the American Vietnam War in the 1960's and 70's.. This picture was taken on 25 August 2012, Sig....,

A place I've heard of but never got to visit (which probably was good). Not sure Americans "used these",...when American ground forces were in the area, bunkers like these would have been of very minimal tactical use. On the other hand, soldiers of the Republic of South Vietnam could have found use for them.

How interesting to see these old bunkers! They're so different from what we've got here on the coast ... those massive Endicott installations ... and it's fascinating to see how other people constructed their safe havens. Great shot!

There is a tunnel there now that allows for an easier way to go north and/or south, but the scenic way is to go over the summit!
