Description
This fish is so named because it looks similar to a sword scabbard when lying out on the block! It is a delicacy in Madeira, where I have been for the past week.
It is a deep sea fish which is completely white down in the depths of the Atlantic ocean where it is caught on hook and line from depths of 1000 meters and more. It is an eel like fish so is quite boneless and turns black as it comes up into the light completely dead from the lack of pressure and with eyes popped. It is about 1 metre in length. I am sure you could find more info from your search engine.

Mate I bet you are having a great time. I recommend wearing 5 bathing costumes and a sock if you decide to go snorkelling!

An impressive beast, Jeff. You have been captured the danger very well, my friend. At least for me, this image looks pretty scary. I hope you had a nice holiday at Madeira, and you will certainly have made a lot of pictures of the flora there. Ha, I hope you still like to be home again ;-)

I know these well Jeff, when I was a kid I had a fascination for the creatures of the deep. But I didn't know about the colour change, nice bit of info there mate. Welcome home from your holiday, and with one of what I bet are a whole host of great shots mate.

Never heard of it before, and certainly never saw one either. Looks pretty scary! That's quite a change, from white to black, must be the blood cells breaking with the pressure change. Wonder who was the first person to eat one, and what brought them to it? It doesn't seem to inspire hunger in me for some reason. Great capture!
