Description

This is the 45 foot ditch that encircles Maeshowe Tomb on the Orkney's. It goes with the other photo I just posted. You can get a sense of the labour it took to construct this site. The ditch alone was a monumental (hah!) task given they had no metal shovels and were probabaly using antler bones and who knows what else to excavate this ditch by hand. Those familiar with Stonehenge and especiallly Avebury will know why it has been postulated that this was a henge and that there was once a stone circle between the inside of this ditch and the mound. The difference in sky structure and color between the two photos is because this one was shot with a Nikon and the other was shot with an Olympus. They see textures and colors a bit different and this is accentuated in their RAW files. Totally putting to bed the myth that images right from the camera are what is actually there... camera models see the world differently, just like we do.

very impressive if people go to Google maps and go here and then go to satellite image then they can see that aspect - very bloody impressive

That ditch today would take all kinds of equipment to even begin such a task. What an amazing sky, no matter which camera it was taken with. Awesome capture, Roxy! I'm constantly amazed at what can be pulled out of a RAW image... My 6D shoots RAW + jpg which is nice because I can quickly review the jpgs, and determine what corrections are needed - then go to the RAW images in PS and have fun. They even updated the firmware on the little camera on my quadcopter to capture in RAW.

I have to admit I like the sky texture in this a bit more than the Olympus. Really love those clouds. As for the ditch, early architects and engineers might be considered quite clever considering what they had to work with.

Green, Green Grass of home!!! Excellent shot and location. With a bit of color tone PW on the clouds this would be a winner.
