Description
This is an adult male kestrel. I think they are one of our most beautiful hawks. Sadly, this guy will never be free again. He has a wing that has never healed from a car hit. He is in our educational program. I spend a great many hours talking with school kids about wildlife. They love to see the animals up close. I do see the good in this, but I have a hard time putting a wild animal in jail for the rest of its life. Few of these guys accept a cage. It seems that we need a better way.

he is very beautiful! I understand your distress, but, as you probably already know (and can lecture me(us0 about it) that other than putting them down, there's not much choice. While he may not be out doing what nature intended, he is serving a great purpose to educate and inform.

and you know what would happen if you did set him 'free' - he would be dead in moments and that to me is more distressing, even though it is nature's way of things

I do struggle with this. After I see the animal always think we are going to eat them, and always attempting to get free, I think that maybe one day free would be better than years in a cage. I try to think how I would feel. Sometimes an animal seems to be OK with us keeping them. Those I love to work with. Most never accept it.
