Description

This view is "just around the corner" from my previous post by the title of "Marooned". Very zoom worthy. This is the view looking south from North Head Lighthouse to the mouth of the Columbia River. Here the ever strong westerly flow of the Columbia River meets the mighty currents/surf of the Pacific Ocean. Look carefully here and you will see two jetties (North and South) portrayed as straight grey lines. The jetties are two miles apart but the shipping channel between them is 600 feet wide and dredged to 43 feet deep. Sixteen bar pilots guide inbound ships across the bar and safely up the river to their ultimate moorages.

Great clarity and perspective in this image of the long beach and undulating waves, as they disappear into the distance, Bill.

What a VIEW! Wow, Bill - you really managed to capture the feel of this coastline - I can almost smell the salt air! The tiny figures on the beach really show the scale of this scene! Well done, my friend!

Zoom is a must. You can actually see the waves breaking at the mouth of the river in the distance. No way you'd get me out there ... it's dangerous! Terrific shot, hon. Ready to go back? :)

A beautiful soft sweep, yet with very strong, etched lines throughout. There's something embracing about your water-landscapes, I've not yet been able to describe why. It has to do with the generosity of your views and the equanimity you give to many of the elements in the picture. For all the ferociousness of a vast meeting of ocean and river---esp a river as wide as this---you still manage to photograph these scenes like a loving parent, embracing it and calming it as only a loving parent can do. (Is that good enough?) The bulges of the hills, left-front, are soft, and they set off the long lines of the water, both right and in the back. And thanks for pointing out the jetties---I'd not have noticed. They seem so small in this perspective, just one of the many lines that contribute to the sweep. And the water and the sands make an abstract of tonal variations, moving from gray blues to gray silvers to gray grays, etc: Your eye has caught the natural morphs of a huge shoreline. And the mountains in the background are the perfect capper for the image. It's grand, sweeping, and yet gentle and 'loved'. A very peace-giving shot for a sight so dramatic. And the people are wonderful additions---sprinkles on the sundae, frosting on the cake. (Not sure the people would like to be compared to chocolate sprinkles, but in this image, they're the final sweets added to the delectable dessert.)

Beautiful shot Bill. I used to walk along the beach in Jersey after the summer on days like these (or rainy days) when I had the whole beach to myself. Besides the sound of the surf there were only the gulls!
