I need assistance! I am not saying I am a brilliant photographer by any stretch. Still so much to improve on. Light being the head of that list. I seem to excel at the things that "stick" around for you to shoot. Flowers, objects, landscapes, etc. Today, I tried my remote shutter control and set up for humming birds. I cannot seem to lock on focus. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :) Thank you!

I wouldn't say you are doing anything wrong as such mate. Have you tried the cameras AI focus it is a continuous focus that will track the subject, that should stop the lens hunting. Also setting the focus point to centre only helps Fred. Keep in mind that in AI focus there will be no bleep from the camera, so it is a kind of "Leap of faith" But I think this is the way you should go mate, It will constantly track a moving subject. Excellent shot here BTW!

BTW mate, forgot to mention to have a spare battery at hand as AI focus will eat the battery, especially if you are driving a longish lens.

If at the end of the day all this fails you will nail it with the AI servo mode, but again, heavy on battery life

Geee! Here I am losing it. My language is blocking to catch, what Ronnie means. I often have the same problem. Anyway, this shot is a total succes in my opinion. I Adore it.

Very nice capture.

First I chose between speed or aperture, for a small and quick hummingbird its a question of shutterspeed I think. with small focus and aperture perhaps, I do most by my self but when I am not satisfied I have to read the manual of the cam...:-( it helps :-) You are doing most beautiful pictures, like this!

the advice of adode sounds like good instructions. I have not been so great capturing fast moving targets. mean time your flowers are outstanding and deserve full screen

This is absolutely lovely. I'd say listen to Ronnie about the hummers. They are tricky, because they move so quickly. You will spend a long, long time just watching and getting the feel of their movements, and that will help some. I've only ever managed them when they stop to rest or eat, never in flight.

First Fred, this is an outstanding photo! Second, I am glad you asked this question. After reading Ronnie's reply I pulled my Canon Instruction Manual out and read through the entire AF section. Must agree with Ronnie. Now I'll have to find an appropriate target (like a hummingbird) to try this out. Live and learn:)

I have to saw that the lovely colors and details like the stamens and pistils in this posting, is what drew me to your gallery. I still have problems trying to catch moving subjects! Maybe a better camera is in my future!
