Description

Looking back over the stern from the upper deck of the ferry from St. Margaret's Hope on the Orkney's as we head towards Gillis on the north coast of Scottish mainland. It was putting up a good drizel and a fine wind so everyone else was below. My teacher told me to never turn away the chance to shoot in bad weather. You'll never get such a moody shot on a clear day. I was happy standing there on the wet deck, wearing my new hiking sandals, which I had nabbed in Edinburgh a few days before, feeling the wind beating on my rain jacket and testing the limits of my new Olympus. (Of which I had already cracked the LCD monitor on a nasty drop on the Isle of Skye. It never faltered and now she is being fixed.up.)

Excellent depth and contrast, I think you would do well with any camera, you have the eye... :)

Great lines to the horizon. All the angular objects contrast with the sky beautifully. I agree on the depth and dark and light contrast too. An excellent shot as reward for recognizing opportunity.

The prospect of the passage on the ship seems to lead towards its end, then the infinite full of uncertainties and fears represented by the stormy sky. The B & W then gives a great drama to the scene. Congratulations! A picture really strong

This really caught my eye. Like your teacher's point about weather. I tend to duck and run when the weather kicks in but my camera will take it, so I should give it a go. Good news about the new Olympus.

Very good shot. We photog are notorious for going outside when everyone else is hurrying in and it's for just such superb shots as this we get wet and cold while everyone else is huddling around the fire.

This is just spectacular, Roxy! B&W was truly the way to go with this one - it communicates the mood so well! One can almost feel the wind and drizzle you experienced.. Looks like that Oly is serving you well, my friend!
