Description
Turning right away from the pond takes you to Reykjavik's main shopping street, Laugavegur. It is lined with upscale boutiques selling jewelry, lithographs and expensive Icelandic clothing. In this image you can see how the Halgrims Church dominates the center of the city. It can be seen from just about anywhere.
Once you get over the feeling that everyone is related to the Muppet's Swedish Chef you find Icelanders friendly and helpful. I'd been walking around for about four hours and was looking for something to eat. Some typical Icelandic food perhaps? I was pointed towards a restaurant with a menu board outside advertising fixed plate meals. The first menu offered mashed fish followed by fermented shark. The second menu had mashed fish and smoked puffin. The third menu had mashed fish and minke whale.
So much for Icelandic food.
I stopped at Prikkid, Reykjavik's oldest café (1952) for a really tasty cheeseburger and a $10 beer. Afterwards I had to use the 'facilities' which is what most people I met call it. The restroom was so small I felt that, if I wanted to turn around, I would have to leave the room. The sink was actually put in sideways to make it fit. I would later find this frugality carried over to the beds I slept on. They were just wide enough for one human body. If you turned over you would fall out of the bed. All the Icelanders I met seemed of normal size so why so small?

Cool view and interesting story about size. if you were to see the racks (beds) on a ship you would think that the US Navy took an idea from the country. one learns to roll over without moving

Hehe! I must tell my lodger who is a very large lorry driver not to visit this country. I wonder why they mash their fish, I prefer mine more or less whole but filleted, and eat something fishy several times a week. But you can keep the whale, shark and puffin.

To answer your question, probably they do it this way to preserve the space for future additions to their buildings... they live on an island, they can't expand... speaking about mashed fish, I had once some sort of burger made out of mashed fish... well, it wasn't bad, but since I don't know which fish parts were mashed, I can't trust it... Nice capture!
