Description
The year is 1961. The launch vehicle is Mercury Redstone which was built by Chrysler Corporation. The Mercury capsule was built by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. There were two manned launches of this sub-orbital vehicle. One carrying Alan Shepard, first American in space. The other Gus Grissom. Redstone was not powerful enough to send a man into orbit. That job would be handled later by the Convair Atlas rocket which sent four other astronauts to orbit including John Glenn, first American to orbit Earth. Redstone was a derivative of the German V-2 and as such, was propelled by water alchohol and liquid oxygen which produced a liftoff thrust of 78,000 lbs. I did these images in a sort of stylized way because I did not build launch towers and associated ground support equipment for my Redstone, Atlas or Titan-II rockets. I did for my Saturn-V and shuttle which I'll post later.
I built the 3D model of the Mercury Redstone shown here back in 1993 on my Amiga 2000 with Video Toaster/Lightwave 3D V-2. I sold the model through Viewpoint Datalabs until around 2000 or so, whenever they became another company. In that respect, both my 3D Redstone and the real one, became technosaurs.
