Description

Been meaning to try this for ages..... Shot in daylight today then de-saturated; otherwise unprocessed apart from levels/ curves. No sharpening. 600mm £350 Skywatcher ED80 telescope versus same focal length £7000 lens. I am always a fan of the underdog :) Telescope precision focussed at 10x in live view, Canon 600mm F4L using autofocus only. Telescope is native F7.5, therefore Canon lens was set at F8 to be comparable; trying to be as fair as possible! So, which image belongs to which?? Thanks for looking... ~Steve~

The top has more detail but I would have been very happy with either.

In my humble opinion I think # 2 belongs to the Telephoto and # 1 belongs to the telescope. Both are great images but # 1 has better definition. I think the trick is on the focus. Autofocus is not always so accurate as manual focus. I never capture a good image of the moon using autofocus. (Anyone would think you could have saved 6,650.00, but I like to see a photo of the Canon lens manually focused before stating this LOL)

Hi netot. I bought the telescope because I could never focus the Canon lens accurately enough - manually - on stars. I was secretly hoping the telescope would provide the better image, therefore. Unfortunately, the more contrasty and detailed (top) image is with the Canon lens! I guess in this instance the quality of the glass outweighs the focusing accuracy....

Both have their points. I like the crisp details on top but that loses the effect of the rays on the bottom. Coin toss depending upon what the desired use will be.

that Canon 600mm F4L is about $14,000.00 is it not? impressive for both but they were not shot exactly at the same time it would appear from the shadows being different(more pronounced on the bottom). I think the top is from Canon, but only guessing

Hi Richard. The images were taken within 10 minutes of one another. I bought the telescope because I could never focus the Canon lens accurately enough - manually - on stars. I was secretly hoping the telescope would provide the better image, therefore. Unfortunately, you are correct.... the more contrasty and detailed image is with the Canon lens! I guess in this instance the quality of the glass outweighs the focusing accuracy....
