Description

This is a full screen shot, so please zoom! Eilean Donan Castle is without a doubt one of Scotland's most iconic castles, it has been so well photographed that it is almost impossible to see an image of it and not immediately identify the place as being Scotland and at least having an inkling of the name. I was blessed with a mid-morning shoot with broken cloudy weather so I had a grand 1.5 hours madly rushing about to get my angles and views. This being one of my life long bucket list things to see before I die. Eilean Donan stands on a small island at the intersection of three see lochs and thus strategically controls all water passages in this area of the western Highlands. It was founded in the 13th century and has undergone at least three major changes in form. It was built by the Mathesons for King Alexander II but became a stronghold of the MacKenzies's and their allies Clan Macrae. Clan Mackenzies involvement in the 1719 Jacobite uprising lead to the castle's destruction by government ships, who spent three days blowing it to pieces. It was reconstructed to its present form, which is close to the 18th century one in between 1919 and 1932. I can tell ya, she is one fine lady.

Wonderful Historical documentation ! I know how difficult is to take pictures of some of most photographed place in the world ( I live near Venice) Your image and the idea of brown monochromatism give to it a sense of past that is something of must in it !

As seen in the opening scene of one of my favourite cheesy films of all time - Highlander. I can virtually quote the whole film word-for-word :) Good work cloning out the coach parties and tourists in bright T-shirts!! Confess when I went to Skye some years ago I didn't stop here - it was... erm full!! Beautiful treatment and well done for finding it so quiet. Popped into my faves ;)

Actually I did not have to clone out anyone. Our guide got us there early, just after opening, on a Sunday and there were maybe 10 people on the whole site. It was just a matter of patience and a bit of luck to get this shot. I think there is actully one person in it but with the high digital noise postwork he got nuked. Other times I was not so lucky and there are damn red spots in awkward to clone spots. Once I took up photography I stopped buying red and yellow fleece and raincoats, now I wear blue and green when I am on a shoot or in the outdoors as I realize how annoying I may inadvertantly become to some photographer in the area.

Fabulous photo and postwork! I agree with Steve, I feel I've gone back into the early days of photography and that is a very beautiful castle and setting

Great composition. I especially like the way the curve of the bridge leads the eye to the castle & the way the castle's reflection in the water is broken up by the rocks. And, of course, the grainy-grungy postwork was a perfect choice for this subject. Outstanding...

Ye gods...... This is absolutely epic! When I look at the full size, I feel I'm being transported to another place and time, I hear bagpipes playing, and feel the cool moist air on my face. Such is the power of this capture, Roxy. This is magnificent - and I love the postwork you've done!

Wow, great image and great PW.! I never thought that the color of my clothes could ruin someone else's photo. It is very thoughtful of you to use discrete colors. I'll put it into practice.

That's right... it's a real beauty. Here you feel safe and secure. It resonates with so much past that I immediately have a head cinema. Such as horse carts zuckeln this way to their destination. What there is for a busy activity in the courtyard. You did really much time spend to take this castle in all their beauty. A great architecture. Your image layout and image breakdown is awesome. Only the castle alone will not do justice to her beauty. Only in the midst of this beautiful landscape, she blossomed. You've thought of everything. Also, that the mirroring is fully visible. You lead my eyes involuntarily along this path to the actual object. This picture is like a story...PERFECT, Roxy. I have rarely seen a better capture.

Wow! What a shot. The use of the bridge along the side of the image to lead they eye to the castle is excellent. Nice amount of castle to be seen along with the water landscape. The rough sepia really adds mood to the old feeling of this. I would love to see a less altered version of this one. I'm sure it's quite spectacular in raw form. The beauty of this can make one forget the seeming drudgery of castle life, especially in the winter.

I agree with you Roxy : red raincoats would only be authorized in the fields of poppies... Nice shoo, postwork and storyline...

Gorgeous place. I've been looking at a lot of photography on Pintrest. There's a feed I think you would like called 'Beautiful Decay,' A lot of very interesting places abandoned and now only showing hints of their former glory. Many castles and mansions, there.
