Description
Access to the lighthouse was an ice covered dirt track. Going up was uneventful but coming down I slipped and fell on my back. Fortunately my camera broke my fall. Neither of us was injured (Sony builds tough cameras) but I slid the rest of the way down on my behind.
You can see Iceland in any number of ways. You can book a ride on a small plane, sail the coast looking for whales or you can travel into the countryside. If you choose the latter there are only two ways to do it. You can walk or you can ride.
When the Vikings came to Iceland they brought their horses with them. Because of their remote location they had little interaction with the rest of Europe. And so, over the course of a thousand years, while the European horse was bred and hybridized, the Icelandic blood lines remained pure. The people of Iceland are very proud of their horses and have resisted efforts to breed them with other varieties of horse. I can understand why. For me they are the super models of the equine world. Originally used for war and farming, today they are used to take tourists on excursions into the Icelandic countryside.
Look back through history and see what the European horse was like a thousand years ago.

Great! I love these horses are totally different from any I have seen before. We see that they have good character but also that they are tough and proud (Like Icelanders, I imagine), But ... they also remind me of a group of teenagers, may be due to the hairstyles LOL (sorry could not resist to say) :)

Great shot and lesson in history. I did not realize that Iceland had its own race of horses, or that there even were horses on the island.
