Description

Unlike the massive cathedral in Reykjavik, country churches are simple structures. Made of iron siding to withstand the harsh winters they are built in the typical Lutheran style. We would visit five churches on our journey and, while several appeared to be abandoned, this one was still in use.

OMG.... this church is soooo charming. The spire paneling and stained glass windows are so lovely. It reminds me of a dollhouse.

I've developed an appreciation for building materials based upon geography. Our "little white churches" in this part of the world are made of wood, of course. I have a friend who lives in a country that has no trees suitable for construction, and everything there is made of brick and concrete. I showed him a picture of an old local church (it was on Lopez Island as I recall) and rather than noticing my fine composition or excellent postwork, he said, "... this is made of WOOD? Is that a wooden building???" So I see this picture and I say, "It's made of IRON??? Doesn't that rust and smell metallic and hold the cold?" LOL! Regardless of all that, it's a terrific photograph. It takes me someplace I've never been. Wonderful!

Tara's remark is fascinating. I'm not surprised they used metal in such a harsh environment. What I love about the picture is that you have it standing almost like an afterthought, against the harsh cold hills or mountains behind it. And yet it insists on being there, it's not budging for anything. And the red fence---which seems to go on forever (even though it may terminate right outside the shot)---not only fences the place in, but seems to fence in the whole mountain range itself. It's a forbidding shot, suited to the subject material, and your big patch of strong white in the sky seems like the kind of sky these churches would demand. A stark cold shot, with those stand-out reds and saturated blues making such harsh contrast. Fine job again, Mark. (This is the same church, I assume, as the one you posted that door from (next upload), and it's great to see the context. And I see the door really does open to a small 'gap'---which makes your crop/framing in the door-shot so 'right'. Even the entry is harsh, with those gray-blue platform-steps. You almost think it doesn't have heat inside...)
