Description
Same RAF call to scramble since WW 2, but quite a different set of equipment (no bell either). This is set during the cold-war era, with EE Lightning interceptors ready to roar off the tarmac and burst through the clouds to identify, shadow, and warn off if necessary any aircraft of "special interest" violating Britain's airspace. Filling a vitally important role, the Quick Reaction Alert System team is the "tip of the spear" in Britain's air defense. "Ready" all the time is probably the most apt of all descriptions of the pilots on the QRA team. Pulling 24 hour shifts, the pilots spend most of the time preparing and waiting for the alert that will set the system's gears in motion and propel them into the sky in mere minutes to deal with the current situation. That moment has to be pure exhilaration and adrenalin!
This is a project that I envisioned quite a while ago, and was inspired by Rob's frequent gushing about his love affair with the EE Lightning. (I get it, Rob!) Doing some reading for the project, I discovered plenty that I didn't know about this amazing aircraft.
I could never find anything that resembled the QRA hangars, so eventually I had to construct my own. So here's a first attempt. Dig it Rob!
This is my first complete large scale and complex modeI from the ground up. I want to build a Q shed as well. That should be a lot easier than the hangars, so as soon as I get a chance I'll tackle it. Normally the real hangars are not this neat, from pics that I've seen, but there is a lot of stuff going on in the pic so I cut myself some slack.
Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, Rob, and also Neil, by the way! Cheers, guys!
EE Lightning: free on sketchup warehouse by PM3D modified a bit.
Ladders: Part of Neiwil's EE Lightning package generously free at sharecg. Another beautiful Lightning model as well!
QRA Pilots: Epici's low poly enemy soldier. Various gear from here and there.
Ground Crew: Couple of Max Greuter's workmen figures, free on sketchup, modified.
Land Rover: Free on sketchup warehouse by Roman, retextured and simplified.
DB Tractor: Shared by Tryphon! Thanks Luis,...yes, although it's WW2 vintage, I actually found a pic of one in use at a QRA hangar! Go figure.
QRA Hangars: I confess, my folly! I built it in Sketchup 8 just for the heck of it and tweaked some bits in C4d6.
If I forgot anything...sorry.

Thanks for this mate!! Yes, I'm sorry but I do love this aircraft.. Having heard many MANY jets of all nations through the years this is the only one that sounds like the air is crackling as its jets start.. And when the afterburners kick... well.. On another note I have shots of the U.K.'s only surviving complete Q sheds! (With a Lightning inside!) If you'd like, send a mail? Or I'll post? Good job mate! Rob

:-) Quite the lightning storm between you and Rob....good to see. Great render, certainly gives a feel for the times. The D.B had a long career to be sure..( I believe Luis is working on an update for the later version ). Stunning as always Bill......
