Description

A blast from the past as I found this old photo taken in the mid 60´s (Author unknown). We used to live just around the corner. How many times have I played football on that street as a young lad, (unfortunatly I´m not in the pic, but I´m sure I remember a few of the lads here.) Taken in 1965 in the back street (slums) behind the Steel works in Sheffield (U.K.) No Cars, No Trees, No Grass, No Color, No Money, just black smoke that covered everything with a layer of grey, and a black and white TV (if you were lucky). As every street corner in Sheffield had a "Corner" Shop (and still does), the shop on the left of the pic "Topham´s" was wonderful. Old Mrs Topham did a fantastic "penny Tray". which was a tray full of different kinds of sweets, ruhbarb and custards, black jacks, bazzooka joe bubble gum, pear drops etc. and you could buy 4 for a penny, which was great for the kids when money was short. It was impossible to go out and play without getting totaly covered in soot and dust (much to the annoyance of our parents, but what can you do, the stuff is everywhere.) Anyway, restoring this old pic was a labour of love for me and brought back soooo many memories. Please ZooM and get dirty. Have a nice day.

Pine apple chunks and cola cubes and cola lollies, barley sugar rods wrapped in orange film. Fruit salads, Palm toffee, Fry's boys five chocolate, Calypso and Jublee frozen drinks, sweet peanuts, Spangles, acid drops, clove sweets, winter mixture, Trebor mints, Foxes Glacia mints and fruits, Cadbury's Aztec bars, Peanut rings, Sherbet lemons, and fountains, Mojo's, Flying saucers, Parma violets, Pez with the little machines, red liquorice laces, Trebor fizzers. Sharps buttersnap, Caramac chocolate, And finally I remember Jamboree bags, they were a big hit with us :) Other memories are playing alley gobs. This brought back a ton of memories for me too Steve. Thanks for that.

Well I'm jealous. The best we ever got from Fulton's Market was two candies for a penny. My early childhood was spent in a small town surrounded by farmland so the air was a lot cleaner and we got dirty the old fashioned way, by playing in actual dirt. But the rest of it sounds familiar. We also had Bazooka Joe and many other treats that are no longer made. I miss some of them to this day. Superb restoration. Thanks for the memories.

Ah yes, the third world, Yorkshire; LOL! What a starkly haunting scene this is. It's funny how things in our memories seem so much different than the actuality was. I guess our little minds couldn't encompass our placement in the universe. I discovered this when I looked at photos of the house I grew up in, Los Angeles in the 1960s. Tiny little box of a house, but I remember magic in and around it. Superb restoration of this shot, there is so much to see here!
