Description

This started out as a test image. It didn’t exactly do what I’d intended, but I liked it enough to sit and stare for a while. It’s a layered image, based on rather random associations. It was going to accompany the story “Humans on Peshtigo Street” but it proved a bit too busy: it’s hard to find a good place to put a tile, and I didn’t want to break the picture up or insert the intrusion of text boxes or anything like that, and so I fiddled around with variations on this theme. A similar image also graces the story “Mother’s Land” but the “Peshtigo Street” image isn’t embedded in that. The Peshtigo Street sign—largely obscured here—isn’t real. There is a Peshtigo Court in Chicago, and I’d taken a picture of that sign; I’d intended to use it in another way, but I didn’t want the visual reference to point to something/somewhere real…and so I did a bit of urban re-planning, and turned Peshtigo Court into Peshtigo Street, and—as this and other images indicate—set about using that unreal street as the base image in an embarrassingly large number of montages. This is one of the more successful efforts, and one of many that will find its way here; there’s also a whole science fictional universe based on that modified street sign, and so I suspect that there will be quite a number of “Peshtigo” images cropping up over in the Writer's Gallery, too. One or two of them might have something to do with fire, as Peshtigo Court shares its name with the actual town or Peshtigo, Wisconsin. That town burned on exactly the same day that Chicago burned. In fact, the Peshtigo and Chicago fires were both a part of the same phenomenon, and there were blazes reported as far away as Michigan. Essentially, Chicago and Peshtigo were caught in the same fire-storm. None of that has made it into this image…but who knows what other references and associations might lurk in here. I'm also sure that you might find Tara and Mark in here somewhere, since this is essentially a 6-image blend, that may actually be only 4 images or as many as 8...I really can't remember...all I know is that there was quite a lot of Bear McCreary music playing. Anyway, this started out as something else, and became…well…this. I suspect that there might be more to say about this, but I can’t really think of what, and so I’ll leave this image to say something on its own…whatever that may be. Thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great week. I’d planned on catching up on commenting (I’ve been viewing when I can) but, as expected: other things cropped up. I’ve been looking though, and I’ll be commenting this week, I hope.

  1. I would call this, "Waiting for the Light." 2) Peshtigo is a great name. It's enough like Perdido that it makes me think of China Meiville. 3) What a superb result! This has great cohesion and interest. I like the wavy stripes that pull it all together, and the different points of view on pedestrians. WAY cool! 4) Isn't that interesting about the fires?

"Anyway, this started out as something else, and became…well…this." It usually does, doesn't it? This is an excellent work in a style that reminds me of some of the graphic art I saw in the early seventies. Of course most of that was anti-war. The stop light reminded me of something I read many years ago; "They control us with their machines. We spend so much of our lives waiting at lights. And then, in a final irony, they let us run through all the lights on the way to the cemetery."

Very cool work, Chip; I can see a lot of places to put a title, but it would of course depend on the title being added, the size and font etc. But that's just me. I like the imagery here very much!
