Description

Captured 4/27/14, at the beautiful Renaissance Faire, held at the beautiful Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, in semi beautiful Irwindale, California. Part of a musical troupe shown between gigs. I also have frontal shots of them which will be displayed shortly. I see a violin, and what I believe is a mandolin on the lady to the right, as opposed to a lute. Then again, it could be a banjo as far as my musical instrument knowledge is concerned. Totziens.

Wonderful series again, Harry, of these Merry Wives...I'm clueless on the instruments too, but they're very pretty, and your photography is excellent as always!

You know how hard it is for me to skip images, here? It ain't easy. But continuing with my "selection" (I'll be back for more)... I wonder if they were doing a production of "The Merry Wives of Windsor," one of Shakespeare's wild romantic romps in which people deceive, cajole and fight while love pops up at every corner. Real Shakespearean comedy, filled with some of Shakespeare's best names (ie, Bardolph, Pistol, Shallow, Slender, Mistress Quickly, etc---great names!). And it has one of Shakespeare's most beloved comic characters, Falstaff (who utters the famous line, in another play, in the midst of battle: "Honor pricks me on! Yay, but what if honor prick me OFF when I come on? How then?" A big heavy-drinking coward, who cavorts with every female within a 10 mile radius...) Now what these woman have to do with the play, I'm not quite sure: But they have the presence, joy, and rustic energy perfectly suited to the play. I wonder if they weren't in the play... Anyway, wonderful first shot: an obviously energetic lady---from her costume alone---in repose with all those solitary bales of hay around her. A fine capture of repose after a theatrical event. Love the shot. (And her cup sitting there alone, with "The Merry Wives of Windsor" written on her back flap.) The next two are visually very active, both having criss-cross of violin and spear, with all the lines and collisions of costume and color around it. And a guy paying someone, lol! For a roll in the hay? I love that you got that in here. The 3d one has fine angles and crossing energies---another of your fine crowd shots. And yes, that's a mandolin or something like it (and a mandolin, btw, is not a lute, you're correct; it is, however, in the "lute family" which includes the mandolin, guitar, and even the Indian Sitar; but yes, the mandolin isn't a literal lute, you're wholly correct). And that lady is also holding a bass. A multiple musician! And that violin is an early cousin to the modern one, as it has 5 strings while the modern one has 4. That's nit-picking, I know, but just a curious fact. And I'm amazed at how many period instruments this faire had! The final shot is another solo shot again---more activity than the first shot, but still a 'solo'. And it's filled with a boisterous presence, in her proud stance, her costume, her boldness, and the fact that she plays 2 instruments---neither of them easy to play. A lovely combo of shots, with a rustic joy all wrapped up in 'back' shots (not easy to do), and lots of faire activity around. The top shot is a terrific theater shot, in repose. And btw, the shot following---of their fronts---shows some wonderful smiling, the whole of the bass fiddle (which looks very modern), and just how big this theatrical seating area is, with wonderful gatherings in the background. (You did a good job of correcting the light there, too---so different from the light in these shots.) A real joy of a grouping, befitting the "merry" in the title. (Forgive my diversions on the period, its instruments, etc...just my way of interacting with this amazing series and adding some background to it. If it's tedious, just skip over it! The series inspires a lot of reactions in me...)
