Description

It took a photography newsgroup populace some time to convince me that the Magnolia I grew up with is, in the North, simply a bush with lovely little flowers. This bloom is more than six inches across and is one of dozens on the tree. The Magnolia trees in the South can get huge. Excellent shade. I can't smell but have been told they smell wonderful.

We were in Louisiana and Mississippi in March ... far too early for magnolias. As someone who is more familiar with the little bushes with pretty flowers, I find these to be pretty amazing!

In Houston the Magnolias started blooming in April. In 2011 I was keeping a lookout for them starting in February. That's when I noticed the pods starting to form. I'm posting a pic of THE tree that shaped my expectations for what a Magnolia is. I grew up two blocks from this tree. This tree doesn't bloom though. Don't know why, just doesn't. I would love to see the Northern Magnolias. I'd find them to be amazing I think!
