Description

As every insect that has black and yellow stripes is either a wasp or a bee to me (city lad) I have no idea what this is. The thing was quite large and chunky. Please Zooom for full flavour. Have a nice day.

Hoverfly, Volucella zonaria. My favourite one! The larva live in the nests of social wasps, including the Hornet

I was going to say 'hoverfly' but looks like I'm too late!! Nice shot.

Excellent capture! I really like the brown on this hoverfly - it looks like lacquered wood. (I didn't know it was a hoverfly, but that seems to be the general consensus. :)

Super close up. I was going to guess 'fat wasp' but I trust Andrea with anything bug related.

Great shot - love the detail & color, but especially the composition - the way you've lined up the hoverfly perfectly parallel with the frame in front of the strong diagonal of the flower. I'm not that knowledgeable about insects either, but a few days ago, my wife & I took my grandson to a fascinating talk by a local entomologist. In addition to a great exhibit of large preserved insects, he had several live ones that we were able to touch, including a walking stick & a tarantula (I know, it's an arachnid, not an insect). He finished off his presentation by offering the audience an opportunity to taste a freeze-dried insect. My grandson & I thought the crickets were tasty & crunchy, but my wife couldn't bring herself to do it...
