Description

Two of the elephant girls were from the circus. Now as a child I loved the circus but then you grow up & realise things are not always plain sailing. I can always remember as a child hearing on the radio that someone was going "White elephant" hunting in Burma & I wanted to go. Now I know what "White elephant" hunting really meant. I digress, Jason the keeper was telling me that one of the girls as a young calf was taught her "tricks" by the trainer being in front of her, she had a person either side of her with scaffolding poles. he would ask her to do something & if she didn't (yes you have guessed it I am sure) they whacked her with the poles. He said in the end she just did it as doing what was asked of her was easier than being hit. What is it with people, is it some form of small man BIG animal tamed??? Saw something on the comp, some 18year old girl "socialite", holding a dead leopard she had shot, it was in her arms, there was also a rhino & something else. She is growing into a fine young lady isn't she!!!!!!!!!! Would be good if her parents put their money to some good use?? I see a lot of cruelty, especially in the dog & cat world & don't get me started on poor animals in cages too small. Saturday rant over :o)))) Thanks for all the lovely comments & favs, so, so appreciated. xxx

I have to say I never went to a circus, not because I had any deep advanced intelligence regarding the welfare at the time of animals for my age but clearly my parents did and I was raised to respect animals. Many big top circus shows abused their animals terribly behind the scenes and everyone is shocked when the poor elephants can take no more and go on a rampage and end up sadly being shot to prevent them injuring or killing more people. The understanding of animals psychological aspects and their requirements is no less important than our own. Zoo's today are no longer merely a place where human's can be entertained looking at animals behind bars and more about preserving endangered species and in this case rescuing and soothing the trauma mentally and physically they experienced by our fellow inhuman beings. If you go over to YouTube there is a documentary about the history of Coney Island's amusement parks.... such as Luna Park... in the old B&W footage there can be seen a handler walking elephants amongst the busy jostling crowds, later on we learn one of the elephants killed some members of public and would be put down... more like murdered!.. earlier days of electricity they called up Thomas Edison and they made it some kind of sick sideshow as the majestic creature was cabled up and electrocuted. Terrible inhuman sideshow... a hideous event in the archives of history and man's abuse of animals through his ignorance... and for the lust of money.

Beautiful photo of one of the largest animals that we have. Let us be mindful of that.

As you know I was brought up in he same era as you Barbara and yes as the years have gone by we are supposed to have become more civilised but there are so many uncaring and cruel people still around. Oh I had a tear in my eye when I read about that beautiful elephant, what terrible memories she has bless her. Thank goodness her life is special now and she is cared for by people who love her. It would be so great if the future was a much better time for the animals of this planet and they could roam it without fear of humans and have their habitat maintained so that they can thrive and live life as nature intended. Wonderful shot of the magnificent elephant. hugs and love xxxxxx

I never appreciated the poles at the circus with the hook on the end! Not a good training tool!. I understood that the girl from Texas paid big money to go on her hunting safari. The rhino and leopard in the photos were sedated for their annual check-up and were not killed. She did kill a lion with a bow and arrow but he was scheduled to be euthanized due to over population and aggressiveness. I read that her safari fee will support the preservation of that area for about a month and the protection of the other animals in that preserve. Not the best deal but 4,000 elephants were slaughtered, in Africa, in 2013, just for their tusks.

Sigh. the inhumanity of man. It's everywhere .. even on the farms animals are totally mistreated. I do not understand it. No .. I'm not going to go off on a rant .. I promised myself I wouldn't. One a day is enough.
