Description

This was taken today on the Grand Western Canal at Tiverton in Devon. The horse is taking the strain on the tow rope pulling around 50 passengers to the next village along the canal. A constant supply of polo mints was the persuader that cajoled him into the task! Much better in zoom. My hospital appointment is for the 5th August.

A great shot and very interesting, Jeff. Here on the Neckar by the year 1878, the ships were also pulled by horses.

Atleast a horse doesnt make so much noice as a motor does. A fantastic sight :-) Now you know when to go to hospital. That is a good thing.

Absolutely beautiful shot, I love these canal boats. I didn't know there were still some pulled by horses. I feel sorry for the horse, that's got to be heavy!

What a great image. It takes the viewer back a hundred years and more. We had canal barges in New York State pulled by horse and mule. The most famous was the Erie Canal celebrated in a song written in 1905. I've got a mule, her name is Sal Fifteen years on the Erie Canal She's a good old worker and a good old pal Fifteen years on the Erie Canal We've hauled some barges in our day Filled with lumber, coal, and hay And every inch of the way I (we) know From Albany to Buffalo I'll keep a good thought in August. Good luck with that.

Great photo, but I can't help thinking that horse is in need of more solid food than mints!
