A work in progress! Hi! My name is Melinda. I am happily married to the love of my life and we have a daughter who is in college. I live in Southern California and I am an amateur photographer. My husband bought me my Kodak P880 for Christmas in 2006. I looked at it and thought I'd never figure it out! I've only taken regular every day snapshots and never looked through the lens in a "creative" way. Then in March 2007 someone introduced me to Renderosity.  In May, I became brave and decided to upload my first photo... I haven't been able to put my camera down since! LOL. I still have a lot to learn, but I sure am having fun doing it. I have come a long way though. This time last year, I couldn't even put a photo on the computer! Now I have started to research DSLR cameras ... Who knows what the future brings! Update: I now have that DSLR :) Was the best Christmas (2008) gift!   I did the research and picked it out and Santa put it under the tree. It's a Canon Rebel Xsi .

I have a new DSLR, the Canon 7OD. A gift from my husband for Mother's Day. So much to explore!

Sorry to hear about your back. I hope it heals quickly! Fun and creative shot you've posted here! I'm glad you took the time to capture it! :)

I echo a speedy recovery Melinda. This is fantastic. The only advice I will give is if you are going to shoot people in the park, watch out for three things. 1: The light will tend to be on the green side if the sun is bright, so shoot raw, then you can white balance later in post, other than that do a custom WB in camera, have the subject hold a piece of white paper, and get in close and shoot that paper for your WB. You camera manual should tell you how to perform a custom WB. 2: Watch out for harsh shadows, take a reflector with you, if you don't have one, any moderately large white area will do, even a passer by in a white shirt :) An alternative will be to seek the shaded area, but you may still need a reflector or fill flash. 3: Just be aware of the background, try to find a nice even one which isn't cluttered, and has a nice plain colour. I have seen countless shoots in parks with gaily coloured BG's and it just sucks. Stick to those and you should get some nice results. Finally if it is a dull day, consider fill flash, but NOT the pop up flash on the camera, if you have a speedlight, use that off camera is preferable. If you have no speedlight, then it is back to the reflector again :)

Oh BTW If you work by custom WB keep a keen eye on the light as it changes quickly and you may need to do another WB, also if you set for sunny, and go into shaded, you will deffo need to set another custom WB

Stellar capture in this stellar concept, Melinda. As for reflectors and sharp shadows, Photoshop should be able to take of that. As for your physical discomfort, I emphasize with you, because not only do I have a chronic sciatica problem, but, worse yet, since March, a heel spur in my right foot that radiates up into my ankle, leaving me with a painful limp. Am seeing a podiatrist about that. But, even with those problems, I was able to tolerate several hours at the Renaissance Faire taking 445 shots of everything, whether it moved or not. Of course, it took some days to recover.
