Description

Back in my Rhino3D days, making dragons was something I did often, not to mention animals creatures in general. After getting hired by e frontier all that stopped and I ended up just making humanoids and aliens. While those are cool I started missing real creature design. So today, I started work on a new dragon. I started off with the version of Drogon that I did not go with. Originally there were two designs that I came up with. Both were modeled to completion but only one was going to get the sculpting detail and be included in Poser. So there was the more Wyvern like Drogon with the long horns that flowed smoothly into his skull and there was my Dragon-Dog which was hornless (called it that because it was short necked and had a bulldog stance). So this new dragon is being built from the Dragon-Dog model. I'm cutting it up in ZBrush, then sculpting the individual parts and sticking them back together. Basically it goes: Cut body parts off. Dynamesh the body parts. Sculpt out new forms. Then Zremesh, subdivide and continue sculpting to add new detail. That's how old hornless here now has a head (and neck) full of horns. Once I've got the entire body sculpted I'll add the higher level skin/scale detail. Then, if I'm not swamped at work, I will retopo this guy and hopefully make a poser version I can sell on my own. Wouldn't that be nice?

This looks great! Nobody will be as good as you at creature modeling in Rhino! And you do so well in Zbrush too!

Thanks, man! I do sometimes miss the old Rhino days, though I imagine I'd be lost if I were to try and model anything in it now. lol.

I think it's always great to have new dragons in the market. And it's interesting to read more about your process.

Thanks :-) I'm actually thinking of creating a series of I guess they'd not be tutorials but more like workshops where I show different ways of using ZBrush and Poser together for like, character concept work starting in Poser and ending in ZBrush or creating a figure within ZBrush to be used in Poser, etc. Have to find some time to gauge if that's something people would be into and then figure out how best to go about it.

excellent work and I think there is lots of scope for someone of your talents in making creatures for poser. if you look at any of the DAZ animals with the exception of the horse and cat, they all look like stuffed toys. think people would be over the moon for a tiger that actually looked like one or a puma even. good luck and thanks for pointing me to the zbrush section which I shall now look at with envy — I am at the pushing a sphere level :)

I remember, back then, bringing a mesh from one software to another was a frustrated dream and wishfull thinking....
