Description

...by way of the Astoria-Megler bridge. The bridge spans the Columbia River from Washington to Astoria, Oregon and it is 4.1 miles long! I can tell you, it is a steel cantilever truss bridge and the longest continuous truss bridge in the North America ... and that is what I remember :) It was a pretty cool drive... except for these crazy suicidal birds :/ So, if you ever get over that way, take the bridge :) Ever since I saw the movie "Kindergarten Cop" with Arnold Schwartzeneggar, I wanted to see Astoria. Finally, after all these years I got to see it. We had dinner there, but there was no room at the inn ;) so we had to continue on...... as Arnold would say "I'll be back". Have a great weekend :) ~Melinda~

ErectorSetville! Love the depth, perspective and geometrics in this pic of that splendid bridge over troubled waters, Melinda.

Nice POV. Astoria is a fascinating place; I always reserve some time to explore when I'm in the neighborhood.

So interesting to see comments from people (like my friend Fred) who find this to be a far-away and perhaps unreachable place. Something so familiar to me! Now just imagine how it is to go across this in the motorhome, when your view is UP several feet! That little railing along the side of the bridge is nothing, and it feels like you're driving across a ribbon with nothing to keep you on the road. Bill does a terrific job, but still ... it doesn't pay to look over the edge too much, especially on that high bit just before you get to the other side! LOL! Last time we went across there was last September, and we had to delay our trip for a day due to high winds on the river. (It really whips through there!) We stayed an extra day in Longbeach, and crossed in good weather. I have a sort of love-hate relationship with the Astoria bridge, depending upon the weather and who's doing the driving. :P This is a terrific shot ... thanks! :)

Excellent perspective and capture of this amazing bridge (I can remember when we had to take the ferry across this span of water). There is a photo someplace (I can't find it doing a search of Google Images, so I must have seen it in a magazine) of this bridge taken from a similar perspective as your photo, only looking toward Washington from the other side of the bridge and at the top of the highest part of the road. Fog completely blankets the lower part of the bridge, but the top is clear. It gives one the feeling that they're going to drop down into who-knows-what as they proceed. I prefer your image - I like to see where I'm going. haha Excellent capture! And I hope you enjoyed your trip. :)

I love this photo - I always take bridge photos through the windshield!
