Description
Shell middens by definition are just prehistoric refuse pits. They are the places where Aboriginal people dumped the waste products of exploited food resources such as shell and bone over the last 100,000 years. Midden sites can range in size from small shallow discrete scatters to large stratified deposits that can run along a coastline for hundreds of metres. Middens can also contain artefacts made from stone, bone and shell.
Port Philip Bay, Australia.

Wonderful history.

A new word for me today. I've seen great piles of clam and oyster shells that would be middens...deposited many years by native Americans.

Really hard to imagine for me.... so many shells.... what you could do with it. I think in direction art . Superb perspective (in zoom even better) I love this low angle view.

WOW!!! A shell collectors dream - my wife's parents have a table made out of shell fragments and then covered with a hard drying resin!
