Description
A cairn is a man-made pile (or stack) of stones. The word cairn comes from the Scottish Gaelic: cà rn (plural cà irn).Cairns are found all over the world in uplands, on moorland, on mountaintops, near waterways and on sea cliffs, and also in barren desert and tundra areas. They vary in size from small stone markers to entire artificial hills, and in complexity from loose, conical rock piles to delicately balanced sculptures and elaborate feats of megalithic engineering. Cairns may be painted or otherwise decorated, whether for increased visibility or for religious reasons.
In modern times, cairns are often erected as landmarks, a use they have had since ancient times. Since prehistory, they have also been built as sepulchral monuments, or used for defensive, hunting, ceremonial, astronomical and other purposes

This reminds me of where I spent the day. Very nice photo. Cairns were used to mark the corners of a piece of land so that people knew where the boundaries were between one piece and the next. This was instructed by God for the Israelites, so that they would have allodial title to their land. We would do well to emulate them.

That is cool and interesting, outstanding capture!

Yes, have seen these many times while hiking in Utah and Arizona. These really help from losing your way when trails become obliterated; or, on a cloudy day. Great shot Martin.

They are both works of art Martin - I have only seen stacks of flat rocks in a straight up tower style!
