Wow! Lucky you! This is a High Brown Frittilary. "None of our British butterflies have decline more rapidly than this one, which used to occur in most large woods in England and Wales as far north as Cumbria. It is now found mainly in the Lake District and Cumbria, with a few sites in between, totalling about 50 colonies". Pocket Guide to Butterflies, Lewington. What a find!

Great shot Pat,I wish I could take macros on my camera. Can't get up close with a lens that has a focal length of two feet. Hoping to get a super zoom bridge camera for Christmas :)
