Description

The de Havilland Dragon Rapide was the most successful British airliner of the 1930s and 1940s. It was also used extensively by the RAF and Royal Navy in the Second World War. This aircraft was built at Hatfield in 1941 as a Dominie. It served with the RAF as X7344 until 1943, when it was allocated to Scottish Airways as G-AGJG, supplying the Scottish Islands, including the main naval base at Scapa Flow. During the mid 1950s it was used for joy-riding out of Heathrow Airport. In 1974, it was declared unfit to fly and the Duxford Aviation Society 'rescued' the aircraft in the hope that it could be restored to flying condition by volunteer workers. The Imperial War Museum provided workshop facilities, and all the component parts of the aircraft have been completely rebuilt. The rebuild was completed in June 2004. This aircraft led the official Celebration Flypast over Buckingham Palace on 10th July 2005. Statistics: Construction: Wooden structure with plywood and fabric covering. Engines: Two 200 hp de Havilland Gipsy Queen 3 air cooled in line six cylinder. Performance: Maximum speed: 235kph (157mph) Service ceiling: 5,944 m (19,500-ft) Range: 930 km (558 miles) Dimensions: Wing span: 14.63 m (48-ft) Length: 10.36 m (34-ft 6-in) Height: 3.05 m (10-ft 3-in) Weight: Empty: 1,486 kg (3,276 lb) Loaded: 2,495 kg (5,500 lb) This picture was taken on 12 July 2014, Sig...

Fabric? Wow. That's some nice, shiny paint! At first I thought it was polished aluminum, but the ribs (and no rivets) give the game away.
