Description

Stokesay Castle was built in the 1280s and 1290s in the village of Stokesay by Laurence of Ludlow, a very wealthy wool merchant. The Gatehouse seen through the open door is a later 17th century addition.

Beautiful photo. Wool was a very important export for great parts of England, so it is understandable that, being very wealthy, he had reason to be worried about his safety and well being. Hence the large building and strong iron reinforced oak doors. Did this building also comprise treatment and storage areas for the wool? The thought of thieves stealing from storage places comes to mind. Having the storage and treatment facilities inside the building removed that risk, too. Keep up the good work! :-)

Love this shot Steve. Great visual of the light coming into the entrance just a few feet. Gives you a sense of the darkness all around you.

Neat framing and contrasts, that's quite a brightly painted gate house, hope it doesn't attract too many thieves ! ~Cheers~

Hehe, not sure if it was barrel distortion or time signature;) These homes so frequently end up like this. Great idea to catch this in a door.
