Description

Bodie, California October, 2013 Bodie was a gold mining town in the mountains on the border between California and Nevada. It's a ghost town now, and open to the public as a park. This iron wheel was among several mining artifacts near the entrance to the town.

A creative POV - that wheel turns what could have been a fairly dull & ordinary composition into a a very appealing one...

A super picture but it seems such a shame that history goes unloved.

This brings a whole new meaning to "magnificent desolation." What a great shot, Tara! That rusty old rim in the foreground just makes this photo! Oh, what shots I could get from the air...

You've captured this magnificent again, my dear friend. The angle is 'cool', the colors such warm, and everything on it so very interesting to watch. I would have liked it to discover that mine on my own. Hehe, you never knows, maybe they forgotten some teeny weeny bit of a golden grain of sand for me. That must have been the wheel of fortune, which you have captured in this desolate looking, golden land, my friend.

Here's that "interiority" again. Even though it's an outside shot, your way with the big wheel---that you caught it from underneath, bathed in shadow, looking out from underneath its protective 'eaves'---makes it feel we're peering out at the world from an interior place. The comments above react strongly to your pov and composition, as they should; and I'd bet that part of what they're feeling is how you enclosed us with the composition, allowing us to 'look out'. The line of the darkest spoke is aligned with a shadow on the hills as well as with the line of that hill itself. And, while the wheel has a large vertical element, your crop allows it to speak "horizontally," which leads us across the landscape and takes us to the tufts of dried grass and to that lonely stone hut back there. The stark clean blue sky makes a strong contrast with all that bleached dried earth. A beautiful arid shot of a beautiful-hued object; and of a desolation which has real poetry in it.
