Description

Taken on a sweltering hot summer night just off of downtown Boise, Idaho. I was on a quest for cold beer. I was so wasted with the heat that I would have settled for industrial American lager; but luckily I managed to score a few 750 ml bottles of microbrewed India Pale Ale in a nearby gas station. The conference asked for business attire, which was ok in airconditioned rooms, but at 105 F totally crazy when you had to go out for food, beer or walk back to your hotel. The smell of baking hot ashphalt permeated the air. If you've ever been near or worked a road paving crew you know the gritty feel that exudes the atmosphere. That's what walking in downtown Boise felt like that night.

You are right Mike. This was shot about 9:00 PM, as you can see by the setting sun, and it was still scorching.

Gritty is a good descriptive word for this shot. It has a very nice range of gray tones & that setting sun & the reflection of the sunset in the windows look great. And it looks like one of those set up & shoot quickly before the oncoming traffic arrives shots. I was in Boise for the first time a few weeks ago, but it was just a stop along the way to somewhere else & we only got to spend half a day there...

Roxy, this is a very cool and gritty capture for sure. However after reading about your experience there this sounds like the last place I'd want to be when it's hot.

really i like alot. Roxy. i 100% love your b&w photos. tops in photography, all past famous photographers i think would enjoy your work. and iagree about not wanting to be there. have you eve tried the micro bre called " Fat Tire"? mmm mmm good stuff. a colorado brew.. not sure why but this photo brings this song to mind, maybe cause of the feeling of the b&w. Boulevard - Jackson Browne Down on the boulevard they take it hard They look at life with such disregard They say it can't be won The way the game is run But if you choose to stay You end up playing anyway It's okay The kid's in shock up and down the block The folks are home playing beat the clock Down at the golden cup They set the young ones up Under the neon light Selling day for night It's alright Nobody rides for free Nobody gets it like they want it to be Nobody hands you any guarantee Nobody The hearts are hard and the times are tough Down on the boulevard the night's enough And time passes slow Between the store front shadows and the street lights glow Everybody walks right by like they're safe or something They don't know Nobody knows you Nobody owes you nothin' Nobody shows you what they're thinking Nobody baby Hey, hey, baby You got to watch the street, keep your feet And be on guard Make it pay baby It's only time on the boulevard

Very apt imagery for the atmosphere. There is a heavy overworked feel to the box and industrial buildings. And not surprisingly the city seems built for industry and not people. This wide stretch of one-way road designed to move cars and trucks their exhaust compounding upon the heat of the asphalt.

Awesome B&W! It's kind of eerie with the street so empty. And interesting to see a hint of progress with the large skyscraper crane in the background. Great shot and lucky find at the Gas station. I'll bet it was a local Idaho brew.

This brings out so much mood - it's an amazing shot, Roxy! I really love the feeling of emptiness here, as everyone reties to the comfort of AC. Makes you wonder how our forefathers dealt with the heat. I suspect they were used to it - we've become spoiled, methinks.
