Description
We saw a lot of these red buses at Glacier National Park. This one was parked behind Lake MacDonald Lodge. 500 of them were built in the 1930's by the White Motor Company for the national parks. Most of them were retired in the 1950's, but the ones in Glacier were reconditioned to run on propane (much less pollution than gasoline) & a fleet of them is maintained to this day. They're 25 feet long, seat 17 passengers & have canvas tops that roll back to give the passengers a better view of the mountains. They were nicknamed "Jammers", because the drivers would often jam the gears while riding on the steep mountain roads.

I rode in one of these in Yellowstone National Park in the mid '60's. It was a beautiful day and the driver had the top down. He said that the one we were in had over 1 million miles on it.

I had heard of these. Perhaps on a PBS program about the National Parks? Whatever it was, this gives me a feeling of familiarity. What fun it must be to ride in a bus like that!
