Description
A closeup of sap on tree bark, taken in my yard.
The air around here has been filled with smoke the last couple of days. It's been blown here by the wind from fires burning to the south. Last night we had thunder & lightning which is supposed to continue today & which creates the risk of more fires in this year's very dry environment. Adding to the gloom yesterday was the sad news of Robin Williams' suicide. I first became aware of him when he started doing standup comedy in San Francisco in the 1970's & it was immediately obvious back then that he was a brilliant comic genius with an incredibly creative mind that seemed to operate at blinding speed. How could such a brilliant man, who apparently had a loving family, a wide circle of friends, huge popularity & material success, fail to find a way to be happy in this world? It's really hard for me to fathom what kind of inner demons haunted him so horrifically that he would take his own life...

I've seen these sap jewels around here too, and never have been able to capture them satisfactorily. This is so lovely, and I also am quite saddened by Robin Williams' death.

Your picture is mesmerizing. The light shining on those colors and textures is remarkable! As for Robin Williams ... I have no words. :( What a loss.

On Robin Williams, when someone is carrying so many vectors of energy, so many voices, so many characters into which he slips and then flies out of, so many pulls and performances dormant and waiting to be brought into the world (calling out in him, which you could see when you saw him ready to slip into another character off the top of his head), the mind and heart can become weary and emptied. In a film about a great jazz saxophonist, someone asked why the saxophonist was depressed after some performances, when he made such light and beauty during the performances. Another musician said something like, "when you empty yourself so deeply every night, some mornings you just can't get yourself together again". I think Robin Williams went through something like that. Which contributed to his drug problems, alcohol, and so on. And I guess if you add Parkinson's into the mix, it was just more than he could manage and balance. His frame must not have been strong enough for all he carried inside it. It creaked, and cracked. That's at least my thought on the matter. It was a huge loss. You might say that a boiler brings warmth and protection to living beings; but inside the boiler, it's fiercely hot and blasting. We saw the light and warmth from Williams, but who knows what he felt inside the boiler... But to the picture: I couldn't do a session in your gallery without commenting on at least one tree closeups. You do a number of these, and they're all revelations. This one is almost a closeup of a lavish food concoction. It has a softness, and lights too. And crystalline formations. And a feeling of a dead-of-winter icy surface. It seems to have candy on it, in spots. Or little gemstones. And your in-the-middle-of-things crop puts us right into its midst, splashed right down inside it all. Beautiful and lush, as all these tree closeups are; and fitting of your title, "jewels in the sap".

Beautiful colors seeping out of your tree and I agree with your assessment of Robin Williams - a waste of a genius mind! :o(
