Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper!
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

A real characterful chap, I like the B&W version too as it adds a gritty quality to it which seems to fit this guy.

A super candid and a super mono too.

Great shot Andrea :)
T.Rex
Makes me think of Captain Ahab with his harpoon, waiting for Moby Dick. Interesting character study. Keep up the good work! :-)

This strikes me as a poignant image. There's a story to this gentleman and I'm guessing it's not all sunshine and roses.

What a superb character study. A retired sea captain perhaps? I prefer the cropped mono. More focus on him and the black and white enhances his features. First rate work.

wonderful candid; you captured his expression and overall attitude superb

A wonderful image of this man on the bench.

I like this composition, with the long wall balancing out the man/tree/bench. Nicely done!

Not your average random man but a wonderful people study. The mono version certainly brings out the facial features and saves us the look of his socks!

Well I'm on my 12th here, and moving on an hour and a half (since I started here), and unfortunately I'll have to stop for now. I hope to be back this week. But first of all, the mono is quite intense, and brings out a strong presence in the man, and his brooding expression. But this version (above) gives a lot of wall, and that's essential to the shot, because it's not just about the man, it's about him in relation to that long blank wall. Not blank, but without any other people or animals along it...The wall emphasizes him in a special way, by making him the one focal point of human life in the shot. (It makes it a really fine street shot.) The deep shadow above the wall simplifies the piece---you're working with true, basic elements here. That black is also fine contrast to the bright wall. (Love the textures on it.) And the man looks intense, brooding, a bit frustrated, and yet animated. Love the details: The stripe on the pants, those great slipper-like shoes, those great socks, his bare legs, his cane...and a lot of black and shadow around him. He's perfect foil to the bright wall which takes up 2/3 of the shot. A terrific street shot, and just right, in color. (I don't know why, but he looks like he should be an Angus.) Fine work Andrea. I hope to be back for more, but I couldn't end on a finer piece.
