Description

Today I had to say goodbye to a very special friend. Slinky. She was a dappled mini-dachshund, and my soul-doggie. The kind of dog that comes around once in a lifetime, giving me morning hugs, and doing a happy dance when I fed her, and singing when she heard opera on the TV. She could be sound asleep and when opera came on, she would begin to sing in her sleep. She would howl and it sounded like she was saying ‘I love you’. She’d snuggle next to me, so close she took up most of the space in a huge king size bed. She’d watch me work on my laptop, and when I shut the computer top, she’d jump all over the bed, knowing we were going downstairs. She was a mad ball chaser. She brought me years of joy, and gave me a place to bury my tears as well as kisses after I lost my husband, LJ, eight years ago. It’s amazing she had any fur left on her body I petted and smooched her so much. She’s always been very healthy, but about a month and a half ago I almost lost her when she became deathly ill from congestive heart failure that brought on pneumonia. It came on suddenly, and by some miracle, our local mountain vet, Dr. Joe, was able to save her and I got one more precious month and a half with her that I truly treasured. She was healthy and vibrant and her old self. And then, two days ago, the problems returned with a vengeance, and her little body began to shut down. She was thirteen and I had to make the heartbreaking decision to let her go. Amazing how you can love a little dog so unconditionally. She saved me many times, and I couldn't bear seeing her suffer when I knew her condition wasn't going to improve, only get worse. Dr. Joe agreed. He said he could maybe get her through a few more days, but I said no, it was time. And I gave my sweet little Slinky one last kiss goodbye and told her to say hi to LJ. Carol

I know the feeling and can identify with how you feel. I had a little chihuahua who was with me until he reached the ripe old age of 18 years which is almost unheard of. He was my constant companion and never complained about anything except being left behind if I was going out in the vehicle. His last day he was going around to all my friends and my better half and giving them a lick on the hand. He looked at me for a few minutes and then laid down in his bed and went to sleep and never woke up. One of the saddest days in my life next to my parents passing away. Think of him often as you will of slinky. And I always remember the great pleasure he was to have in my life as you also will. I truly feel for your loss and extend my deepest sympathies. Nick

It's so hard to lose a pet; they just don't last long enough. My son lost his 14 year old dog, and I had to make the same decision you did with my old Lab a ways back. My sympathy; I know how it is.

Sometimes I think dogs were put on this earth to remind us of unconditional love, not only what we feel for them but how freely they give it to us. They can give with a trust so unbroken you wonder if they weren't created in a different place, a heaven rather than an earth. Beloved dogs have always been, to me, like children, pure and blessed; but they also have a wisdom and understanding that surpasses many of us adults. It's a huge thing when they pass, and I'm terribly sorry Carol. I know that, after the loss of your beloved aunt and the struggles of your beloved friend (Violet)---both of whom you've shown so much love to, here---that this is a hard and sad time for you. I know you will carry Slinky's love like a huge blanket-of-sunshine wherever you go, knowing somehow that she'll be working for you, caring for you, and looking out for you wherever you go, and I hope that gives you solace and peace. Your photo is luscious---I didn't realize she was dappled---and your light makes her look like love-embodied. And I sometimes think, when looking at eyes like hers, that their 'asking gaze' isn't to get something 'from' us, but to be sure we got something from them: As if to say, "do you see how much love I'm giving to you today?" They care so much, they almost plead that we receive it, they don't want us to miss a drop. I'm terribly sorry, Carol, and I pray that her love will walk with you the rest of your life, so her look of "do you feel my love" will be answered over and over: "yes". May it comfort you forever...

Carol, I am so very sorry for your loss and thank you so much for taking time to tell us about Slinky. There is nothing more special than the unconditional love our pets give us, and it is like losing part of the family when they go over the rainbow bridge. There is one book you might want to check out to help get you through this difficult time. The name of the book is "Rescuing Sprite" and it is a true blessing.

I am so, so sorry Carol, your words were so familiar. A true friend to you, lots of joyful & sad memories when you think of Slinky. Our friends help us so much & we at least can do the best for them by letting them go when the time is right. I think it is amazing how they tell us when we must say goodbye. Take care Carol, you will be sad but although time does heal, you never forget & it is very hard now. xxxxxxxx

Oh Carol! I just saw this! I m so sorry- and so glad I got to see the fab Ms Slink last month at least. I am glad your vet was able to give you a little more time to spend together. Both and her Flirt are so special and it was always so clear how much they loved you. I know Flirt will be sad without Slinky, but at least you two still have each other. I know how you feel- we lost Kestrel last week..so down to just the 2 boys now... Feels odd in the barn with the Golden Gals gone and now Special K. Love this special tribute you did of Slink- totally captures her love and charm and that little mischievous twinkle in her eye:) She was a sweetheart and will be missed by all who knew her. Hugs!!! My sincerest condolences. I lost my "soul-doggie" almost two years ado from congestive heart failure, among other ailments, and I still think of her every day. The photograph was a perfect one and your postwork painting impeccable. Though tears will flow freely for some time and the anguish will be intense, I wish you peace and wish for you the days to come when you can think of Slinky with a smile and a laugh. God Bless.

Oh gawd, Carol... my heart just SO goes out to you... this little friend of yours meant even more to you than what most of us pet loving people have... not to belittle ANYONE else's experience, my own included...but I know first hand how utterly she saved your life, your heart, your very sanity, your soul...she was there in the best and the worst part of your life...I just have no words to express properly HOW MUCH I hurt for you. Tears. I have had a "soul kitty" and when he had to go, he didn't want to leave me...he made that very clear, even as terribly sick as he was...but he was suffering so badly like your little Slinky, I HAD to be the strong one for him!! But it was crushing to my heart... and I've lost other long lived companions besides my most special boy....it never gets easier... our pets are little "angels for our soul" and nothing or no one in life can match their love for us. Big Hugs!
