Description

I took Button and Zipper to my sister yesterday morning. I’m happy to report that after a short adjustment they have settled into their new home very well. After getting the babies situated, she asked me to help release a group of raccoons that were ready to go. I never pass up the opportunity to do this. Although a bit bittersweet, it is absolutely the best part of rehabilitating these little folk. Most of them, being raised from babies, have never experienced the wild, and they always are completely filled with joy and wonder. This was just the medicine I needed after leaving my little ones. I know they are exactly where they need to be, but I can’t help feeling that I abandoned them!

First and foremost they are wild animals and you are doing a fantastic job, and whilst it can be emotional letting them go you know it's the right thing to do and it is ultimately the scenario you build up to. Great shot of these guys heading out into their habitat... I'm told they are great characters. I'm sure if you raise them from young it can be easy to become attached to them yet they have to retain their wildness and not be too familiar with humans as not all humans have good intentions when they may have a beer in one hand and a rifle in the other. I guess their future will be down to their own individual fate's... you can only do what you do and upon release they have to go with their instincts and hope it's enough to see them through their lives ahead.

Oh my gosh!!! It is raccoon paradise! Look at that wonderful brook they have to search around in as well as the woods. They must have been SOOO happy!! It would have been fun to be there and watch the wonder from them as they discovered different things!

This is my first group release thus year. The one thing I have come to understand over the years is that it is better for these guys to live even 1 day in the wild and free than 10 years in a cage. Several of these had started the pacing. My cage is 14 x 18. I provide many things for them to explore and play with. Even with that, they needed to be free. Many people make the mistake of thinking that animals "get used to people". That is not true. The only person they get used to being around is me. By the time they are ready to go they hide as soon as they see anyone else. They know tfw difference between me and other people. I agree very much that thus us the best part of all. I also know these were big raccoons. If my brother had not helped, I could not have gotten them to thus wonderful raccoon paradise. Lord knows I am sore today but it is so worth it.
