Description

It's not a Buffalo. It's not a Bison. It's a Beefalo, a cross between a Bison and some kind of cattle. We saw a herd of them upon entering the North Rim area of The Grand Canyon and were informed that they were destroying the meadow lands. In truth, where they were grazing there was an absence of wild flowers. We were also informed by Park Rangers that there were no Buffalo in the USA, Bison. It is a daunting task for someone to correct those people who attempt to sell Buffalo Burgers when they are really Bison Burgers, but someone has to do it - any volunteers?

Park Rangers have the right to misinform themselves, and they quite frequently do just that. It seems to be in vogue for them to think that Water Buffalo are the only type of buffalo in existence. Not so. Plains Bison and Wood Bison are correctly called Plains Buffalo and Wood Buffalo and they abound in North America, thanks in large part to Elk Island National Park near Edmonton, Alberta. Also, the animal pictured is not a "Beefalo." I think the rangers have been eating too much genetically modified corn.

Perhaps it is I who have been Buffaloed. It is a relief not to have to correct all those people who are selling Buffalo Burgers. But what will we tell the army of volunteers who have enlisted in "the correction cause". I guess the good thing is that it appears that there were no actual takes for this. Whatever, the correct labeling of the animal above Buffalo/Bison and drop the Beefalo, it remains a beautiful big shaggy creature.
