Description

This is one of the more complicated models I have ever made. The texturing was as much of a challenge as the modeling. I hope to post more renders but I've waited a long time to get to this point and I wanted to post something. For those who don't know, this is an actual plane. It flew at 80,000 feet at 2200 miles per hour and burned 1000 pounds of fuel a minute. It was a US spy plane that flew missions from the 60s to the 90s. More to come later, Enjoy, -Kix

Great modelling - the hanger looks good too! I always thought that this plane has such a cool looking design.

Thanks Phil. I've wanted to build this model for a long time. The hanger was a rush job so I could render the plane in some sort of building. It worked ok. Thanks again!

Thanks for the comment. Carrara is not a super hi profile package but it can do a lot of cool stuff.

Nice work Kix. The detail is super. Maybe a cool blue on the lights for that vintage, mercury vapor lighting look? But then again, this was made to fly...

Thanks Mark. Nice comment on the lighting. This is just a fish job for me to be able to post something after three weeks of work!

Great work and super detail on the plane ...... and the hanger. I'm sure modeling those smooth curved surfaces wasn't easy.

Thanks for the comment Dustrider! Modeling those dang smooth surfaces on the SR-71 was a major pain but it paid off!

This is really a nice presentation and POV of this incredible plane. To get a little technical, you might think about changing the color to it's actual color for a little "pop", shall we say. Most people think the "Blackbird" is really black, but it is not. It is really painted with a very deep purple-violet (almost black) paint. Very cool modeling! I like!!!

Excellent comment on the coloring! My research had uncovered that fact but I hadn't employed it. I will add it! Thanks for dropping in!

Very nice model of a superb aircraft....if memory serves me these things leaked fuel on the ground, something to do with the skin being so thin. Only when it took off and friction heated and expanded the skin was everything properly sealed. Stunning work, look forward to more...

Thanks for the comment. These planes did leak but not because of looseness in the planes design. They were designed to vent the fuel tanks to purge Oxygen in the fuel tanks. When the plane heats up to 500F, Oxygen on the fuel tanks is a bad idea. They carried Nitrogen to fill the tanks as they drained (great solution!).

Me too! I've waited a long time to make this model and finally got around to it. Thanks for the comment.
