Description
In the morning of 9th October 1941 the Force Z was spotted by the Japanese submarine I-65. In the afternoon a float plane from the cruiser Kinu spotted the two battle ships and reported it to the fleet. A reconnaissance aircraft operated from Soctrang was diverted to Saigon, the HQ of the 22nd Air Flotilla, after it photographed Singapur. The films were immediately developed and so the sight was confirmed. Because the two ships were not in Singapur, the sight of the ships en route to north were confirmed. More float planes were send to the spotting place
In the picture is the float plane from Kinu. It radioed the spotting to admiral Ozawa. Kinu's report was a surprise to Ozawa, because he had no idea she had sent up a search plane. After her report more came in from the search planes of Suzuya and Kumano. The floatplanes were just harbingers of doom...

I really like the way you did the smoke from the ships. Very realistic.

Great job.. Amazing no destroyer cover was with them of any note.. Rob

There were three destroyers with them, so far as I know. HMS Electra was one of them. I have no models of the typical British destroyer in use there to put it into the rendering. The other destroyers were too slow, too old, had not adequate range (one of the destroyers was send back half the way because it was low on fuel), needed refurbishment and so on...

Very nice picture !

I think all Electra had by way of AA was some multi-barrel machine guns so they could do very little anyway. They were still kitted out for surface action- not air attack. Float plane looks great in close up (Sketchup rebuild?)

Yes, from Sketchup Warehouse. ;-)

December, not October. The rendering is very good. Thanks for posting.
