Description

Greetings Folks, On with Legends, (groans from everyone.. lol) This one, a well sight in the skies around the hot spots of the world.. This one an RAF aircraft, based at Waddington (they all are).. The Boeing E-3 Sentry, commonly known as AWACS, is an airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft developed by Boeing as the prime contractor. Derived from the Boeing 707, it provides all-weather surveillance, command, control and communications, and is used by the United States Air Force (USAF), NATO, Royal Air Force (RAF), French Air Force and Royal Saudi Air Force. The E-3 is distinguished by the distinctive rotating radar dome above the fuselage. Production ended in 1992 after 68 aircraft had been built.. So, if anyone breaks one, no more replacements! They are used by France, The RAF, The USAF, NATO (for use of any NATO Country without suitable aircraft), and Saudi Arabia.. Zoom is recommended.. Rob P.S. Duxford Show on Saturday, no Blenheim now (lol) but Vulcan still listed.. Waddington has no show next year, runway being relaid.. ? No idea where everything is lol

Cool! I remember this one, I think I have a BIG picture of this on the ground, I'll have to post some time...Re laying the runway! no small job, have to wonder where they'll move these to.We haven't got that many big airfields left! perhaps they could operate from Duxford...that would be handy. Hope the weather holds for the weekend, I have fingers and toes crossed for the Vulcan and look forward to many other splendours from you......

Very cool pic. I know a retired USAF captain who was an air controller on a Sentry.

Beautiful shot of this old timer. Wheels down and spoilers, too, ready for landing. I remember seeing one or two way back when they were new. Nice to see one again. Thanks for the posting! :-)

Striking bit of quasi silhouetting in this terrific shot of the E-3 Sentry, with its signature radar dome on top, shown either in the process of taking off or landing, mate. Actually, I didn't know that my old employer, Boeing, also built AWACS aircraft. Different facility, I suppose.

Awesome shot, Rob! The US version doesn't have the external refueling boom but otherwise looks about the same.
