Description

Here's a WIP render and teaser of my latest avian endeavors, "Kestrels, Hobbies & Falcons". While it might appear this model is close to release, it still needs to be out-rigged with morphs for the additional projects I have coming up. This mesh, besides being a Kestrel or Falcon, is expected to be a Hawk and Eagle too (including the Bald and Harpy Eagles). A little about the American Kestrel... Its breeding range extends from central and western Alaska across northern Canada to Nova Scotia, and south throughout North America, into central Mexico and the Caribbean. Kestrels hunt grasshoppers, lizards, mice, and small birds. They typically hunt by hovering in the air with rapid wing beats or perching, intensely scanning the ground for prey. Kestrels hide surplus kills in grass clumps, tree roots, bushes, fence posts, tree limbs, and cavities, to save the food for lean times or to hide it from thieves. Females are noticeably larger than males. They are one of the most colorful of all raptors. They are pale when seen from below and warm, rusty brown spotted with black above, with a black band near the tip of the tail. Males have slate-blue wings while the females' wings are reddish brown. Both sexes have pairs of black vertical slashes on the sides of their pale faces sometimes called a "mustache" and a "sideburn." (and yes, I'm doing the female too) It is the smallest falcon in North America and often called the "Sparrow Hawk". This "Sparrow Hawk" name is mistakenly connected with the Eurasian Sparrowhawk, which is in the genus Accipiter (True Hawk family). Rendered in Poser 2014 without any post work. Models: Flink's Sky Dome (Flink/Renderosity), Autumn Forest Superior (Andrey Pestryakov/DAZ3D), Songbird Remix Birds of Prey Volume I: Kestrels, Hobbies & Falcons and a branch from Songbird Remix Perching Places (Ken Gilliland/Hivewire3D)

You got me all excited there for a moment, Ken (damn you - lol). Since you are not finished yet I would only ask that you check the beak notch for proper scaling. It is a very prominent feature on falcons and I know how picky you can be. That's why I love your birds. Anyway, I'm getting ready for the big unveiling and I must say it looks promising!!!!!!!!!!!

Looking good! Would love to replace my DAZ eagle. I'm pretty sure I've seen one of these on the way to work off and on this summer. There are numerous fields and meadows where I live and when I get to this one spot, I often see a fair sized bird sitting on the telephone wire gazing at the field. It definitely has the raptor tail, so it's either a falcon or kestrel. I thought it was too big for a falcon, so I'd guess kestrel. Unless I have that backwards.

The American kestrel is pretty small, 8.7-12.2 inches, where as a Peregrine Falcon is 13–23 inches... but chances are you've seen one, since there are an estimated 4,000,000 in North America. I, too want to replace my older eagle... fingers crossed on me improving on Eagle and Eagle2. I'll be experimenting soon with eagle morphs and textures trying to create one of the harder ones to make... the Harpy Eagle. If I can do that, I'll be comfortable with the rest of the eagles.

Bird runtimes are going to rejoice with your Raptor project I am sure. This is just a start, how good this looks, and lovely setting too. Jan
