Description

Just so that you’ll know: in some it’s perfectly acceptable (indeed expected) to give bees as a present to someone enjoying a birthday. This photo was taken in one of those countries, wherever that might happen to be. (Well, no, I actually took this photo in Chicago, and this particular bee is probably employed by a bunch of local restaurants that get their supply of honey from bees kept [or, rather, hired] by green-urban bee-keepers: quite a number of people in Chicago are beginning to keep bees. Apparently apartment-building rooftops are good for swanky hives, and a few green-trendy restaurants are willing to pay middle-dollar for local honey. Neighborhood collectives are forming, as well, and many people are planting bee-attracting plants in their window-boxes and abandoned-lot gardens. The trend hasn’t really spread very far, but it’s nice to see something like this happening, even if only a trickle of honey is produced.) Denise has been posting a number of stunning floral shots, including one involving a pollinating insect: a honey-bee if that shaggy-insect hair was any indication. The title of the image bore reference to Icarus, though—to be fair—her image was far more interesting than the Icarus myth, despite the fact that there are some rather hilarious (re)interpretations of the Icarus tale out there. This image isn’t a reference to that one…but it’s got a bee in it, and it’s got a flower of some sort, too. I thought of Denise when I saw this, and so…here it is…a birthday bee on a birthday flower for the birthday lady. How nice that both the flower and the bee seem to be lucratively employed in Chicago's restaurant business. Happy Birthday Denise!

An apian restauraneur? Will wonders never cease? What a handsome and fine furry fellow this is, caught consuming the echinacea pollen; it's a popular flower with bees here too. I don't know of any rooftop hives, but there are a number of local small hivekeepers around, and their products can be purchased at the local farmers markets that every town has, as well as the famous Pike Place Market downtown. Also, I have it on excellent authority that David Rhodes, the guitarist with Peter Gabriel (and who is currently touring with Kate Bush, and recently toured with Cyndi Lauper) is a beekeeper in his spare time in the Wiltshire countryside. Ancient Egyptians revered bees, I know; something to do with the underworld. How that relates to honey I have no idea. Maybe there's no connection at all, and I'm likely just rambling ;p Thanks for this beautiful dedi, Chip!

Great photo! Your narrative reminded me for some reason of one of my favourite films, 'Joe's Apartment'.

"Joe's Apartment!" Weeeeeeeeee! I love that movie! It ranks up there on my list of must-see films, another of which is "Harold and Maude" and still another of which--for odd reasons--is "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" which is one of those underrated gems that gets overlooked because of its camp nature, but beneath that cleavage and mayhem there's a tightly-plotted, brilliantly edited piece of cinematic work.
