Melbourne...I guess like most major international cities is changing. Massive new towers are dwarfing classic old buildings everywhere you look. Aesthetically, the cityscape is altering radically. Even where I live, I am surrounded by mega-mansions on all sides that have drastically reduced the amount of sunlight that hits my property. The clothes on the clothes line now take far longer to dry!!!

Yes, but those "classic" buildings overshadowed their predecessors as well. Sometimes, they were perceived as out of place or ugly at the time, too.

Fair point.

Just a sign of the times - sigh!!

I have a passionate hatred of this "CRAP" they are calling architecture these days, glass boxes that as you say selfishly gorge themselves on other peoples sunlight. What pisses me off about it is that they then get fitted with special glass to keep the people inside away from the very sun they robbed from you. Poxy filthy things. On a different note mate, I too as a kid wondered about draining out rivers, and what would lie beneath. Your shot is a great example of how the world and it's heritage is being raped by money people.

Sad to hear and see my friend. God bless.

A lovely comparison shot. I don't mind the new buildings too much, until they get too close to everything else. I dread ending up living someplace all high-density where the air is putrid and there is no nature left.

I imagined your house to be clear of all that, what a shame!

shameful really! and then you hear the 'rich ones' complain about how there is nothing to see ie the classic styles

Don't get me started.. The Shard - that massive marvel in the centre of London that's sooooo brilliant (so they tell us) is still almost empty! So it begs the obvious question - Why???? Fine shot mate Rob

I would choose the classic old building as my view but progress comes with a price. Sometimes I think that I am happy that I am 72 and have lived a fantastic life - don't really want to be around to watch the greed of the future destroy our wonderful planet!
