Greetings Folks,
(Still not sure if Rendo is running right, or everyone has timed breaks for like... now! So, will carry on for now)..
This gleaming Curtiss P-40C Warhawk, is the very latest aircraft to arrive at The Fighter Collection based at Duxford..
It is old, very old!
I'll do a run down from the very cool site for you..
41-13357 was accepted by the USAAC on 6th April 1941, where it went on to serve at Patterson Field, Ohio. After recording around 100 hours there, it was shipped to Puerto Rico. While stationed there is presumed that our P-40C was used for coastal and anti-submarine patrols.
Having amassed 603 hours, it was returned to the Curtiss Factory in Buffalo, New York, where it was overhauled for the Lend-Lease programme with the Soviet Union. The P-40C was then duly shipped to the USSR in December 1941. The history past this point is still relatively unknown.. Build date is unknown, but could be 1939/40..
During the restoration it was decided to finish the aircraft in the scheme of a P-40 based at Chanute Field, Kansas. Our aircraft wears the scheme of 39-159, a P-40C that was stripped of it’s olive drab camouflage paint and used as a personal ‘hack’ for base commanders.
The restoration culminated on the 5th August 2011 when aircraft (now registered N80FR) had it’s first post restoration flight in the hands of Steve Hinton. The aircraft was shipped from Chino to Duxford during May/June 2014, in time for Flying Legends 2014 where it made it’s UK début..
But not the day I was there 'Coz it BROKE!
But here you go, no doubt next year, I'll get shots for you.. It certainly will look good on a sunny day, so, that's buggered it then lol
As I say not sure about Rendo, I did mail them but they have not mailed back, as no-one else has! So I think it is broke somewhere or partly..

Very cool shot, Rod. I always thought that the P-40 could have gone from a very good plane to a great plane if the powers that be would have or could have replaced her woefully under powered Allison engine with the Merlin. That would have been a screamer!!!! Very nice to see it in raw metal. Almost didn't recognize it (LOL).

They did mate :-) The RAF asked for it and it was called the Kittyhawk.. I believe the Mk 'F' is a Merlin powered on, watch out and I'll post one.. Thanks for the comment Rob

What a beauty! Thanks so much Rob for posting this wonderful picture. I love the P-40 and it's wonderful to see one of the earlies looking shiny and new. @Greywolf44: The P-40F was Merlin powered.

What a beauty! Super photo of her, Rob, and great historical data as well. A great addition! It wouldn't be Rendo if something wasn't broken..... I really don't understand why they have so much trouble on such a constant basis anymore.. Sad.

Mmmmm! nice, I'm starting to think it wasn't a bad idea missing Duxford this year....with my habit of kneeling down for low shots, I'd have got soaked in all them puddles LoL!! :-) Great capture, great info...as you say it'll look great flying on a sunny day....
