Description

Aguas Calientes is located in the Cusco Region of the Peruvian Andes, specifically in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, also known as the Rio Urubamba Valley. The elevation of Aguas Calientes is slightly over 2000 m (6,600-ft) and the town is reached by a narrow-gauge train from Cusco. There is no connection by air. From here, busses shuttle visitors to the entrance of the once great fortress of Machu Picchu, built in the 15th century by the Incas and abandoned nearly 100 years later with the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors. Once at the entrance to Machu Picchu it is walking only - and nothing is flat. Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the center of the picture is the channelized Rio Aguas Calientes, a tributary to the Rio Urubamba. This picture was taken on 27 August 2014, Sig...

And is the water warm? Anything called the River of Hot Water must arise from a hot springs, I would think. It's certainly beautiful! If this were Los Angeles, they would have just dug the thing up and put in a concrete channel and called it good.

At first look, I thought that the street had been washed away by a flood. A great shot Sig and now I know how you got up to Machu Picchu. Thanks!
